Accessing Matters
Permissions
- Board Members (and Owners): Can access their own matters but cannot access matters from other boards (e.g., employment matters).

Steps to Access Matters
- Navigate to the Top Bar.
- Click on Matters.
- Select a Board.
- In the matter table, click on any available matter to open it.

AI Matter Summary
Note: AI Matter Summary is in beta release. To use this feature - please reach out to your customer success manager.
Overview
AI Matter Summary helps legal teams quickly grasp the context of complex matters by generating concise, intelligent summaries of ongoing legal requests. This reduces time spent combing through lengthy email threads, comments, and attachments.
What it does
The AI summarization feature distills key matter information into two focused sections:
-
Request Summary
A brief overview of the original request, including:
Who raised it
When it was initiated
What topic or issue it relates to
-
Recent Activity Breakdown
A timeline-style summary of the most recent developments, so teams can immediately see:
What’s happened recently
Who took action
What’s currently pending or next action
Why it matters
Legal matters often involve dozens of emails, messages, and updates, making it hard to get a clear picture of what’s going on-especially for:
Practice Leads preparing for 1:1s with attorneys
GCs needing quick insight into key strategic matters
Attorneys handing over or picking up matters mid-stream
Anyone returning from leave and needing to get back up to speed

By utilizing these features, you can ensure that all aspects of a matter are efficiently tracked and managed within Checkbox.
Slack Messages
You can create new Slack messages and reply to existing threads directly inside a Checkbox matter — so you can stay in context while keeping Slack stakeholders in the loop.
Before you start
- Connect your Slack account in Checkbox so messages can be sent as you (not as a bot).
What you can do
- Reply to Slack DMs from within a Checkbox matter
- Reply to Slack channel threads from within a Checkbox matter
- Use common Slack workflows like @mentions and file sharing (where supported), with updates syncing back to the matter
Create a new Slack message
- Open the matter in Checkbox.
- Click + New thread.
- Select Slack thread (left-hand side).
- If prompted, connect your Slack account.
- What you’ll see: once connected, messages post to Slack as you (not as a bot).
- Choose where to send your message and send it.
- You can create messages in channels, DMs, and group DMs as yourself.
Reply to an existing Slack thread
- Open the matter in Checkbox.
- What you’ll see: the matter context where you’re managing the work (including the Slack conversation when linked).
- Open the Slack thread you want to respond to.
- What you’ll see: the existing DM or channel thread associated with the matter.
- Write your reply and send it.
- What you’ll see: your message posts back to Slack as you (using your Slack connection).
Notes
- Direct messages (DMs): Checkbox can sync and respond to threaded replies in DMs. Slack does not allow apps to reliably capture separate, non-threaded DM messages as part of the same conversation — so those messages won’t appear in Checkbox.
- Participation required: You can’t reply to a Slack channel thread if you’re not a member of that channel, and you can’t reply to a DM/group DM you’re not part of.
- This is designed for Slack-first collaboration: keep the conversation moving in Slack while keeping the legal work and context in Checkbox.
